What is the NAT-TEST?

What is the NAT-TEST?

The Japanese NAT-TEST (Nihongo Achievement Test) is a standardized test designed to measure the Japanese language proficiency of non-native speakers. It is similar in structure and content to the JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) and is widely recognized by educational institutions and employers in Japan.

The NAT-TEST is administered multiple times a year and offers quicker results, making it a great alternative or supplement to the JLPT — especially for those applying for study or work opportunities in Japan.

Test Structure and Levels

The NAT-TEST evaluates your Japanese ability in three key sections:

  • Language Knowledge (Vocabulary & Grammar)
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Listening Comprehension

There are five levels in the NAT-TEST: Level 5 (Beginner) to Level 1 (Advanced). These levels closely mirror the JLPT levels:

  • Level 5 ≈ JLPT N5
  • Level 4 ≈ JLPT N4
  • Level 3 ≈ JLPT N3
  • Level 2 ≈ JLPT N2
  • Level 1 ≈ JLPT N1

The test is ideal for students aiming to study in Japan or individuals applying for Japanese visas, as it is widely accepted by Japanese language schools and vocational institutions.

Why Take the NAT-TEST?

  • More exam dates throughout the year
  • Faster results than the JLPT
  • Widely recognized by Japanese educational institutions
  • Helps demonstrate language proficiency for student visas, employment, or academic programs
